Putting the Sun to Work for Minnesota
Short film contest
The votes were counted, and the results are in. We depended on filmmakers' creativity to make unique shorts that captured the public's attention and showed off Minnesota’s great solar potential — and we were impressed. Thanks to all the contestants for their hard work and commitment to the solar cause.
Here are the winners and the top finalists:
|
1st place: The Man With The Golden Sun For their parody of an action thriller, Solar Hotdish - led by Lisa and Steve Fait – pulled out all the stops. The special effects, acting and set design look like they were taken straight from a Hollywood studio. Involving more than 50 people, this entry’s production quality well exceeded our expectations, as well as the value of the first-place prize. The group said they didn’t enter the contest to win prize money, but to promote a cause they believe in. |
2nd place: Ol' Roun' Sun The second place prize went to this funny cartoon, which pits “Ol’ Roun’ Sun” against his nemesis “Foss L Fool,” who comes from Texas and convinces the Minnesotans to spend all their money on his state’s “efficient” energy. Eventually the people smarten up and realize they’re being hoodwinked – the sun they’ve had all along is a better option.

3rd place: Year 2035 This short tells the tale of a young man who time-travels to the near future. He finds a Minnesota where the air is so polluted by fossil fuels that he cannot see the sun, and must wear a mask to breathe. Disheartened by the future he finds, the man decides to return to the present and keep Minnesota from the path he witnessed, by ensuring that solar energy is part of its future. |
